Migration and Reintegration
Support for Returnees
The Challenge
Many Gambian migrants return home after difficult and often traumatic journeys through irregular migration routes. Upon return, they face significant challenges including social stigma, psychological distress, unemployment and limited access to economic opportunities.
Without adequate reintegration support, returnees risk falling back into cycles of vulnerability and economic hardship.
Our Response
Caritas Gambia provides reintegration support to returnees to help them rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. Our approach combines counselling, skills development and livelihood support to enable sustainable reintegration into communities.
Through structured programs and partnerships, we support returnees to regain confidence, develop income generating activities and reconnect with their families and communities.
Key interventions include:
Individual counselling and psychosocial support
Reintegration guidance and case management
Support for small business start ups and income generating activities
Skills development and entrepreneurship training
Referrals to vocational training and employment opportunities
Community engagement to support social reintegration
Reintegration Approach
Caritas Gambia adopts a people centered reintegration model that focuses on long term sustainability rather than short term assistance.
This approach emphasizes:
- Economic empowerment through business support
- Psychosocial wellbeing and trauma awareness
- Community acceptance and social reintegration
- Collaboration with local institutions and support networks
Returnees are supported to develop realistic livelihood plans that help them build independent and stable futures.
Impact
Reintegration support has enabled many returnees to establish small businesses, pursue vocational training and regain their place within their communities.
The program contributes to:
- Increased economic stability among returnees
- Reduced vulnerability to irregular migration
- Improved psychological wellbeing
- Stronger community acceptance and reintegration
These efforts help transform returnees from vulnerable individuals into active contributors to their local economies.
Partnerships
Caritas Gambia implements reintegration support initiatives in collaboration with national and international partners including organizations working on migration governance, youth empowerment and livelihood development.
These partnerships strengthen referral systems and expand opportunities available to returnees.
