The Challenge
Many rural communities in The Gambia depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, yet farmers often face limited access to modern farming techniques, training opportunities and agricultural resources.
Low productivity, climate variability and lack of market access continue to threaten food security and economic stability, particularly for youth and women in rural areas
Our Response
The St. Joseph Family Farm Center (SJFFC), located in Bwiam in the West Coast Region, serves as a community based agricultural training and development center managed by Caritas Gambia.
The center provides practical training, capacity building and hands on learning opportunities aimed at strengthening sustainable agriculture and improving livelihoods.
Through the center, farmers, youth and community groups gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve food production and create income generating opportunities.
Key Activities
The St. Joseph Family Farm Center supports agricultural development through:
- Practical training in sustainable farming techniques
- Demonstration farms and hands on agricultural learning
- Capacity building for youth and women in agriculture
- Small scale livestock and horticulture initiatives
- Community based food production systems

Youth and Women Empowerment
A central objective of the center is to create economic opportunities for young people and women.
Through agricultural training and entrepreneurship support, the center helps participants develop practical skills that can lead to employment, business development and improved household income.
This approach also contributes to reducing the economic pressures that drive youth migration.
