Caritas Gambia’s reintegration program has a positive impact on returnees, particularly in terms of vocational training, housing support, and social integration.
However, to enhance the effectiveness of these programs, improvements in healthcare, counselling services, and legal assistance are necessary.
Addressing the challenges related to funding and resource allocation will further strengthen the reintegration process, making it more comprehensive and sustainable in the long term.
Reintegration of returnees refers to the process of assisting migrants who have returned to their home countries in re-establishing their lives and livelihoods. This involves addressing economic, social, and psychosocial dimensions to ensure that returnees can achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
The EU Reintegration Project provides reintegration assistance to returnees from EU member states and is implemented in collaboration with Caritas International Belgium. Reintegration assistance describes the support given to returnees who are sent back to their home countries.
This assistance can be provided for as long as 12 months (post-return assistance) or for as little as a few days after the national arrives in the country of origin (post-arrival assistance).
Assistance is offered in various forms, including housing, healthcare, employment counselling, education, and family reunion.
